Thailand is Asia's most visited country for a reason — Bangkok's temples and street food, Chiang Mai's mountain culture and ethical elephant sanctuaries, Phuket's turquoise bays and beach clubs, Krabi's limestone karsts rising from the sea, Koh Phi Phi's legendary Maya Bay, Ayutthaya's ancient kingdom ruins. All connected by affordable domestic flights and a hospitality culture that genuinely welcomes visitors. This is the complete Thailand guide for Indian travellers in 2026.
Thailand's geography makes perfect sense once you're there. Bangkok delivers urban intensity — Michelin-recommended street carts, sprawling temples, sprawling markets. Head north and Chiang Mai trades skyscrapers for artisan workshops and ethical elephant encounters, while Chiang Rai goes further with contemporary temples rising from misty mountains. The coast splits into distinct personalities: Phuket mixes polished resorts with Portuguese-influenced old towns, Krabi keeps things elemental with famous karst formations and quiet island-hopping, and Koh Samui anchors itself in wellness retreats and relaxed beach clubs. Thailand works for almost every type of traveller — first-timers, couples, solo travellers, digital nomads, families and long-term backpackers. The ideal trip length is 9 to 14 days, allowing time to combine Bangkok's energy, Chiang Mai's cultural depth, and southern Thailand's beach resorts. For Indian travellers, Thailand is visa-on-arrival eligible (30 days, ₹0 cost) at all major airports — making it the easiest international beach + culture destination accessible from India. This guide covers every major destination with budgets, itineraries, and India-specific practical tips for 2026.
Top places in Thailand 2026: Bangkok (Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Chatuchak Market, street food, rooftop bars), Phuket (Patong Beach, island hopping, Phi Phi day trip, Old Town), Chiang Mai (Doi Suthep temple, ethical elephant sanctuary, Sunday Walking Street, cooking class), Krabi (Railay Beach, 4 Islands tour, Ao Nang), Koh Samui (beaches, Big Buddha, day trips to Koh Tao), Ayutthaya (UNESCO ancient capital, 80 km from Bangkok, day trip). Best time: November–February (cool, dry, all regions). India to Thailand: flights from ₹8,000–20,000 return (Delhi/Mumbai to Bangkok). Visa: free for Indians, 30 days on arrival.
Thailand at a Glance — Four Regions
| Region | Key Destinations | Character | Best Time | Days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Central | Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi | Urban temples, night markets, ancient ruins, WWII history | Nov–Feb | 3–5 |
| North | Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai | Mountain culture, elephant sanctuaries, hill tribes, trekking | Nov–Feb | 3–5 |
| South (Andaman) | Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta | Limestone cliffs, turquoise water, island hopping, resorts | Nov–Apr | 4–7 |
| South (Gulf) | Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao | Beach resorts, diving, Full Moon Party, laid-back pace | Dec–Sep | 4–6 |
Bangkok and central Thailand are best from November to February. Chiang Mai and the north are also best from November to February. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is best from November to April — monsoon hits May to October. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) has a different weather pattern — best December to September, with its heaviest rains in October–November. For Indian travellers with limited time (7–10 days), the Bangkok + one island base combination is the most efficient. Adding Chiang Mai requires 12–14 days for a relaxed pace.
1. Bangkok — Asia's Most Vibrant City
Bangkok street food is not just eating — it is daily life on a plate. From Bangkok stalls to Chiang Mai lanes, every corner offers something hot and fresh. Thai food explains Thailand better than any museum ever can — Pad Thai, Tom Yum, Som Tam, and Green Curry are the four essential dishes to eat at street stalls.
| Attraction | Entry Fee | Timings | Highlight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Palace + Wat Phra Kaew | 500 THB (~₹1,180) | 8:30 AM–3:30 PM daily | Thailand's most sacred site — the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) inside the Grand Palace complex. Modest dress mandatory (available to rent at gate). Most visited attraction in Thailand |
| Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha) | 200 THB (~₹472) | 8 AM–6:30 PM daily | 46-metre gold reclining Buddha — one of Thailand's largest. Also the original Thai massage school, the traditional massage on premises is highly recommended (~₹700 for 60 min) |
| Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) | 100 THB (~₹236) | 8 AM–6 PM daily | Porcelain-encrusted spire on Chao Phraya riverbank — most photogenic at sunrise and at night when illuminated |
| Chatuchak Weekend Market | Free | Sat–Sun 9 AM–6 PM | World's largest weekend market — 15,000 stalls, 200,000 visitors per weekend. Clothing, antiques, plants, street food. Section 26 for food is legendary |
| Floating Markets | Free entry (Damnoen Saduak ₹100 boat) | 7 AM–12 PM (best 8–10 AM) | Damnoen Saduak (100 km from Bangkok) — traditional floating market on canal boats. Amphawa (60 km) is less touristy and more authentic |
| Khao San Road | Free | Evenings best from 6 PM | Bangkok's legendary backpacker street — budget food, street bars, travel agencies, souvenir shopping. Not a tourist trap — a genuine Bangkok institution |
Bangkok practical tips: BTS Skytrain + MRT covers most tourist areas — buy a Rabbit Card (BTS stored-value card) for convenience. Grab works in Bangkok. Tuk-tuks are scenic but agree on price first — ₹100–200 per short ride. Rooftop bars (Octave at Marriott Sukhumvit, Sky Bar at Lebua State Tower, CRU at Centara Grand) require smart casual dress but the sunset views over Bangkok skyline are among Asia's best. Thai massage street shops along Silom Road and Banglamphu offer 60-minute foot massage for 200–300 THB (~₹470–700) — among Asia's best value wellness experiences.
2. Chiang Mai — Culture, Elephants and Mountain Life
Chiang Mai trades Bangkok's skyscrapers for artisan workshops and ethical elephant encounters. Chiang Rai goes further still with contemporary temples rising from misty mountains. Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of northern Thailand.
| Attraction / Activity | Cost | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| Doi Suthep Temple | 50 THB (~₹118) + 30 THB cable car | Most sacred temple in northern Thailand — 309 steps or cable car to hilltop temple at 1,676m. Panoramic city view. Best at sunrise |
| Ethical Elephant Sanctuary | $70–120 USD pp (~₹5,800–10,000) | Elephant Nature Park (ENP) — rescue sanctuary, NOT riding. Half-day or full-day — feed, bathe (not all sanctuaries), walk alongside elephants in forest. ENP is Thailand's most respected operator. Book 2–3 weeks ahead |
| Sunday Walking Street | Free | Wualai Road Sunday night — 1 km of handicrafts, street food, live music. The best night market in Thailand for authentic local produce and crafts (not tourist trinkets) |
| Thai Cooking Class | $25–50 USD pp (~₹2,075–4,150) | Market visit + cook 4–5 dishes at a farm kitchen. Chiang Mai is Thailand's best cooking class destination. Baan Thai, Thai Farm Cooking School recommended |
| Chiang Rai Day Trip | Bus ₹200 each way; Wat Rong Khun 100 THB | White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) — contemporary Buddhist temple covered in white glass mosaic. Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) also stunning. 3-hour bus from Chiang Mai |
| Old City Temples Walk | 20–50 THB per temple | Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Suan Dok — all within walking distance in Old City. Morning alms-giving ceremony at Wat Suan Dok at 6 AM is deeply moving |
Chiang Mai is the most ethically complex Thailand destination — the elephant tourism industry has a documented history of cruel training methods (phajaan). Book ethical elephant sanctuaries only — Elephant Nature Park (ENP) is the recommended choice, where elephants are rescued and live in natural conditions without riding or performing. Avoid any operator that offers elephant riding, painting, or circus tricks. The moral distinction between sanctuaries and exploitative camps matters significantly in Chiang Mai — the Sunday Walking Street tip about ENP booking 2–3 weeks ahead reflects genuine demand for the ethical options.
3. Phuket — Thailand's Island Capital
Phuket is favored for its vibrant nightlife and scenic beaches — it is the most expensive among Thailand's beach destinations but also the most developed with the widest range of activities. Phuket combines polished resorts with Portuguese-influenced old towns.
| Experience | Cost | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patong Beach | Free (sunbeds ₹400–600/day) | Swimming, beach life, nightlife base | Most developed, most crowded, most activity. Bangla Road nightlife is Thailand's most famous strip |
| Karon + Kata Beaches | Free | Families, calmer atmosphere | 5–8 km south of Patong — less crowded, better water clarity, family-friendly. Kata Noi is Phuket's prettiest small beach |
| Phi Phi Day Trip | $25–60 USD pp (~₹2,075–4,980) | Snorkelling, Maya Bay, island hopping | 45 min speedboat from Phuket pier. Maya Bay (The Beach filming location) — now protected, timed entry. Book through speedboat tours for smaller groups vs ferry |
| James Bond Island (Phang Nga Bay) | $30–50 USD pp | Limestone karst scenery, kayaking | Ao Phang Nga National Park — "The Man with the Golden Gun" filming location. Sea caves + karst formations. Best by longtail boat for intimate experience |
| Phuket Old Town | Free | Heritage, cafes, Sino-Portuguese architecture | Portuguese-influenced shophouses, boutique cafes, street art, Thalang Road — the authentic cultural Phuket most beach tourists miss |
| Big Buddha | Free (modest dress required) | Panoramic island views, spiritual site | 45m white marble Buddha on Nakkerd Hill — visible from anywhere on the island. Sunset views from base are exceptional |
Phuket transport: Grab works, metered taxis from airport (book at official counter), songthaews (shared red trucks) connect beaches at 30–50 THB. Renting a scooter (200–300 THB/day) is the most efficient way to explore independently — international driving licence technically required, enforcement varies. Best beaches beyond Patong: Surin Beach (upscale, calm), Nai Harn (south, local favourite, turquoise water, less crowded). Phuket is especially good for couples and families who want comfortable stays and short travel times between beach experiences and island-hopping.
4. Krabi — Limestone Cliffs, Railay and the Islands
Krabi is the scenic counterpart to Phuket — stunning limestone cliffs, lagoon stops, and postcard beaches. It's also a great base for the classic 4 Islands style day tours. Choose a longtail boat for a slower, local feel, or a speedboat if you want more stops with less travel time on the water.
| Attraction | Cost | Best Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Railay Beach | Longtail boat from Ao Nang: 100 THB (~₹236) each way | Morning (calmer water) | Car-free peninsula accessible only by boat — towering limestone cliffs, crystal water, Phra Nang Cave Beach (Thailand's most beautiful beach). Day trip or overnight stay |
| 4 Islands Tour | $15–35 USD pp | Full day | Longtail or speedboat tour visiting 4 islands including snorkelling, Emerald Cave, beaches. Most popular Krabi day activity |
| Koh Phi Phi | Ferry from Krabi: 350 THB (~₹826) each way | Early morning departure | Day trip from Krabi to Phi Phi Don + Maya Bay. Maya Bay now requires timed entry reservation (400 THB). Most stunning scenery in Thailand — deep turquoise water flanked by vertical limestone |
| Rock Climbing | $35–70 USD pp (half day with guide) | Morning (cooler) | Tonsai + Railay — Krabi is Asia's premier rock climbing destination for beginners. Grippy limestone, calm water below, spectacular views. King Climbers and Base Camp are reputable operators |
| Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Seua) | Free | Early morning | 1,237 steps to a hilltop Buddha — 360° view of Krabi province. Monkeys on the stairway. Arrive before 8 AM to avoid heat and crowds |
5. Ayutthaya, Koh Samui and Other Key Destinations
Ayutthaya is the UNESCO World Heritage ancient ruins of Thailand's former capital (1351–1767). Ayutthaya can be done as a 1-day trip from Bangkok — days needed: 1 day (day trip from Bangkok) or 2 days for a more relaxed pace. Less crowded than Bangkok, more serene atmosphere, beautiful park setting. Key temples: Wat Mahathat (famous Buddha head entwined in Bodhi tree roots — the most photographed image in Ayutthaya), Wat Phra Si Sanphet (three spired chedis — the ancient royal palace complex), Wat Chaiwatthanaram (riverside, most dramatic at sunset, reflected in the Chao Phraya). Rent a bicycle (₹200–300/day) to cover the spread-out temple park — the most efficient Ayutthaya transport. Train from Bangkok Hua Lamphong: 1.5 hours, 15–20 THB (₹40–50) — the cheapest day trip in Southeast Asia.
Koh Samui works beautifully for travellers who want a quieter pace with still-plenty-to-do energy: beaches, viewpoints, temples, and day trips depending on sea conditions. It's especially good for couples and families who want comfortable stays and short travel times between experiences. Chaweng Beach is the busiest (most nightlife, most amenities). Bophut and Maenam are calmer, with excellent restaurants and no party scene. Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) at the north of the island is free and spectacular — a 12m gold Buddha on a small island causeway. Koh Tao (1.5 hrs by ferry) is Southeast Asia's most popular scuba diving certification destination — PADI Open Water course $250–350 USD. Koh Phangan (45 min ferry) hosts the Full Moon Party (monthly) — a 30,000-person beach party that is one of Asia's most famous events. Best time for Koh Samui: December to September. Avoid October–November (its heaviest rains, different from Phuket's pattern).

Thailand Tips for Indian Travellers 2026
- Visa on arrival — free, 30 days, no pre-application needed: Indian passport holders receive free visa on arrival at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, and Chiang Mai international airports — 30 days, extendable once by another 30 days at an immigration office. No online pre-approval required. Carry: return ticket, hotel booking, 10,000 THB in cash (rarely verified but technically required). A land border VoA is limited — fly in for simplicity
- Thai food for Indian vegetarians — better than Vietnam, worse than India: Thai cuisine uses fish sauce (nam pla) and shrimp paste (kapi) as base flavourings in most dishes. True vegetarian options require specifying "jay" (เจ) — Buddhist vegetarian, more strictly plant-based. "Mangsawirat" means vegetarian but may still include eggs. In Bangkok: Ethos restaurant and May Veggie Home serve excellent all-veg Thai food. Chiang Mai has a Buddhist vegetarian food culture — jay restaurants are common. Pad Thai "jay" (vegetarian) is available at most street stalls on request
- Thailand dress code — temples strictly enforce coverage: All temple sites require covered shoulders and knees — sarongs available to borrow/rent at Grand Palace and major temples. Grand Palace is particularly strict and turns away improperly dressed visitors at the gate. Pack one long trouser + one full-sleeve shirt for temple days. Beach wear is for beaches only — Thais find it disrespectful to walk through towns in swimwear
- Currency and payments: Thai Baht (THB). ₹1 = approximately 0.42 THB. Withdraw THB from ATMs (Super Rich exchange stalls in Bangkok offer marginally better rates for large amounts). Most mid-range and upscale establishments accept cards. Street food and markets are cash-only. Carry 1,000–2,000 THB per day in cash. Forex cards (Niyo, HDFC Regalia) avoid ATM fees. ATM fee: 220 THB per foreign card withdrawal at most Thai banks — withdraw larger amounts less frequently
- Thai beaches have extreme UV — pack SPF 50 PA++++ and reapply every 2 hours in water. See our Parachute Advansed hair oil guide — the coconut base protects hair from salt water and sun damage during beach holidays. Also our Plum SPF 50 PA++++ for water-resistant beach sunscreen
Bangkok for Temples and Street Food. Chiang Mai for Elephants and Culture. Phuket for Island Life. Krabi for Limestone and Sea. Ayutthaya for History. Thailand for When You Want All of Asia in 10 Days.
Thailand's infrastructure makes multi-stop itineraries surprisingly easy — domestic flights connect Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Krabi in 1–1.5 hours, and the country's hospitality and deep-rooted traditions shine in all its regions. Free 30-day visa on arrival. Budget from ₹3,000/day. The Grand Palace at dawn. Railay Beach at sunset. Elephants at ENP in the morning. Pad Thai at a Chiang Mai street stall for ₹60. Thailand remains Asia's most complete travel experience for Indian visitors — and in 2026, it is more accessible from India than ever.
Top places to visit in Thailand 2026: Bangkok (Grand Palace + Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho reclining Buddha, Wat Arun, Chatuchak Weekend Market, rooftop bars, Khao San Road), Chiang Mai (Doi Suthep temple, ethical elephant sanctuary ENP, Sunday Walking Street, Thai cooking class, old city temples), Phuket (Patong Beach, Phi Phi Islands day trip, James Bond Island, Old Town, Big Buddha), Krabi (Railay Beach, 4 Islands tour, Koh Phi Phi + Maya Bay, rock climbing), Ayutthaya (UNESCO ancient capital ruins, 80 km from Bangkok — day trip by train ₹40), Koh Samui (beaches, Big Buddha, Koh Tao diving day trip, Koh Phangan Full Moon Party), Chiang Rai (White Temple, Blue Temple, Golden Triangle). Thailand has 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ideal trip: Bangkok (3 days) + Chiang Mai (3 days) + southern island base (4 days) = 10 days covers the best of all regions.
Visa requirements for India to Thailand (2026): Indian passport holders receive free visa on arrival (VOA) at Thailand's major international airports — Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok Don Mueang, Phuket International, Chiang Mai International, and others. Duration: 30 days. Extension: extendable once by an additional 30 days at any Thai immigration office (500 THB fee). No pre-application or online registration required before travel. What to carry at immigration: return ticket booking, hotel/accommodation booking, proof of sufficient funds (10,000 THB or equivalent — rarely verified in practice). Important: the TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card) system may require online pre-submission before arrival — check current status at official Thai immigration website before departure as this requirement has evolved. Land border VOA entries are sometimes limited. For the simplest experience: fly into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi — VOA processing is fast (10–20 minutes) and completely free.
Best time to visit Thailand from India (2026): Overall best: November to February — cool and dry across most of Thailand. Comfortable 25–32°C, low humidity, clear skies, best beach conditions on both Andaman and Gulf coasts. Bangkok and Central Thailand: November to February. Chiang Mai and the North: November to February (best) — cool, clear, minimal haze. March–April: pre-monsoon haze in Chiang Mai region from agricultural burning — some visibility reduction. Phuket and Krabi (Andaman coast): November to April — avoid May to October (southwest monsoon, rough seas, some ferry routes suspended). Koh Samui (Gulf coast): December to September (different monsoon pattern) — heaviest rains October to November. Koh Tao and Koh Phangan: year-round diving possible. For Indian travellers using Diwali, Christmas, or school holidays: November is the ideal window — all regions accessible, pre-Christmas pricing, excellent weather everywhere.
Days needed for Thailand (2026): Minimum 7 days: Bangkok (3) + one southern island base — Phuket or Krabi (4). Recommended 10 days: Bangkok (3) + Chiang Mai (3) + southern island (4) — the classic full-Thailand circuit. Comfortable 14 days: adds Ayutthaya day trip, Chiang Rai day trip, and a second island or more beach time. For Bangkok only: 2–3 days is adequate for the main temples + markets + nightlife. Chiang Mai alone: 3–4 days for elephant sanctuary + cooking class + temples. Phuket alone: 4–5 days for beach + Phi Phi + Old Town + island day trips. Krabi alone: 4–5 days for Railay + 4 Islands + Phi Phi day trip + rock climbing. The most common Indian traveller mistake: spending too many days in Bangkok (interesting but 3 days is sufficient) and not enough on the islands or in Chiang Mai. Domestic flights between Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Krabi are 1–1.5 hours and cost ₹1,500–5,000 booked in advance — making multi-city Thailand highly efficient.
Thailand trip budget from India (2026): Flights: Delhi/Mumbai → Bangkok return ₹8,000–20,000 (IndiGo, Air India Express, Thai AirAsia, Vistara). Book 6–8 weeks ahead. Domestic Thailand flights: Bangkok–Chiang Mai/Phuket/Krabi ₹1,500–5,000 one way (advance booking). Daily budget in Thailand: Budget: ₹1,500–2,500/day (hostel, street food, BTS transport). Mid-range: ₹3,500–6,000/day (3-star hotel, restaurant dining, activities). Premium: ₹10,000–25,000/day (4-5 star, private tours). Activity costs: Grand Palace 500 THB (₹1,180), Phi Phi day trip $30–60 (₹2,490–4,980), Ethical elephant sanctuary $70–120 (₹5,800–10,000), Thai cooking class $25–50 (₹2,075–4,150), Ayutthaya train 15 THB (₹35). 10-day Thailand trip total including flights: Budget ₹40,000–60,000. Mid-range ₹80,000–1,20,000. Premium ₹2,00,000+. Thailand is slightly more expensive than Vietnam but significantly cheaper than Japan, Australia, or European destinations at equivalent comfort levels.
Phuket vs Krabi — which to choose for Thailand (2026): Phuket: Thailand's largest island, most developed, most expensive. Widest range of accommodation (budget hostel to 5-star resort). Most nightlife (Patong's Bangla Road). Best for: first-time Thailand visitors, families wanting amenities, nightlife seekers, buyers of package holidays. Island hopping to Phi Phi easier from Phuket. Phuket Old Town adds culture. Krabi: Smaller, more scenic, less developed. The limestone karsts (vertical cliff faces) rising from the sea are Krabi's unique visual character — more dramatic than Phuket's scenery. Railay Beach (car-free, accessible only by boat) is Thailand's most beautiful mainland beach. Better for: couples, honeymooners, nature lovers, rock climbers, travellers seeking quieter atmosphere. Ao Nang is Krabi's main tourist base — calmer than Patong. Both are accessible from Bangkok in 1.5 hr flight and both offer Phi Phi day trips. Verdict: Krabi for scenery and romance. Phuket for amenities and nightlife. Visit both if 10+ days: fly into Phuket, take a ferry to Krabi, fly out from Krabi (or vice versa).
