Delhi to Haridwar Travel Tips 2026

  • Evening Ganga Aarti timing — arrive by 6 PM for a front position: The Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri starts at approximately 6:30 PM in summer (later in winter). Arrive 30–45 minutes early for good viewing. The Aarti lasts 45–60 minutes. Shoes are not allowed near the ghat — leave them at the designated sandal stands (₹5–10, safe and organised)
  • Jan Rath AC at ₹396 is the best bus value on this route: The UPSRTC Jan Rath AC costs ₹396 vs ₹607 for the Volvo — both are AC 2+2 seated buses with similar journey times. The Jan Rath is the better value choice unless the journey is overnight (when the Volvo's superior seat comfort justifies the premium). Book at upsrtconline.co.in directly for best price
  • UPSRTC now runs electric AC buses on Delhi–Haridwar: The AC Seater Electric at ~₹500 is a newer option — zero emissions, notably quiet and smooth ride. If available on your date, this is worth choosing over the standard diesel AC bus for a more comfortable journey experience
  • Don't take CNG cars beyond Haridwar toward Rishikesh: CNG stations are available in Haridwar city but not reliably on the Haridwar→Rishikesh road or in Rishikesh town itself. Fill up completely in Haridwar before any onward CNG driving. See our Rishikesh guide for this detail on the forward leg
  • Sunscreen for ghat sightseeing: Haridwar's ghats involve extended outdoor time — temple visits, ghat walks, and watching Aarti preparations through the afternoon. Pack SPF 50+ — see our Plum SPF 50 PA++++ guide for a water-resistant option suitable for ghat environments

Jan Rath AC at ₹396 for Value. UPSRTC Volvo at ₹607 for Comfort. Electric Bus for Smooth Ride. Train (Jan Shatabdi) for Speed. Haridwar Drop at Har Ki Pauri for Best Ghat Access.

323+ daily services and 91+ operators make Delhi to Haridwar one of India's most frequent intercity bus routes. The UPSRTC Jan Rath AC at ₹396 is the recommended state bus — affordable, reliable, and AC, with the same journey time as the Volvo at ₹607. For speed and fixed schedule, the Jan Shatabdi Express train (₹300–600 AC chair, ~4.5 hours) beats every bus option. Self-drive via NH334 is excellent for family groups — the Ertiga CNG or Fronx CNG keeps running costs very low on this route where CNG is available throughout. Drop at Har Ki Pauri / Pantdeep Parking for direct ghat access. Arrive by 6 PM for the Ganga Aarti — one of India's most memorable experiences.

Jan Rath AC from Kashmiri Gate at 8 AM — reached Har Ki Pauri Pantdeep Parking at 1:15 PM. ₹396. The bus stopped right at Pantdeep Parking which is the best Haridwar arrival point — walked 3 minutes to the ghat. Guide is accurate about the Jan Rath being the same journey time as the Volvo (₹607) at 2/3rds the price. Evening Aarti at 6:30 PM: arrived early at 5:45 PM, got second row at the main ghat. The experience is genuinely different from any other India travel moment — worth the whole trip.

Drove in the Maruti Ertiga CNG (7 people, family trip) — filled CNG in Haridwar at ₹74/kg. Real-world CNG mileage Delhi to Haridwar: 23.8 km/kg (mix of highway and some city). Total fuel cost for 7 people: ₹650 one way. Split 7 ways: ₹93 per person. Bus for 7 people would have cost ₹2,772 (₹396 × 7) — so the Ertiga CNG self-drive cost 1/4th of the bus option for our group size. The guide's Ertiga CNG recommendation for family Haridwar trips is exactly right. Ertiga's 7 seats + 550L boot + CNG on a route with CNG stations is the optimal family pilgrimage vehicle.
